Walk Against Abuse
C.A.R.E.4Paws hosts an annual Walk Against Abuse at Elings Park in Santa Barbara. The event raises funds and awareness for Safe Haven, a program that supports domestic violence survivors and their companion pets. Cohosted with Elings Park, the Walk Against Abuse includes a dog walk through the beautiful park grounds, fun activities, food, great tunes and a presentation about how Safe Haven prevents suffering and saves lives—and ways to support this critical program!

Why Safe Haven is desperately needed
Every minute of every day, 20 people are abused by an intimate partner in the United States, reports the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence. Sadly, during the current COVID-19 crisis, domestic violence is even more prevalent. Pets are often used as “pawns” in domestic violence situations. Abusers will harm a family pet and/or make threats to hurt or kill a pet to keep family members from speaking up or leaving the abusive relationship. In surveys of women entering domestic violence shelters, as many as 85% reported that their pets had been threatened, injured, or killed by their partners.
Safe Haven assists domestic violence survivors and their companion animals in Santa Barbara County. We do so in collaboration with several agency partners, including Domestic Violence Solutions for Santa Barbara County.
C.A.R.E.4Paws provides free, anonymous boarding or foster care for animals so that an owner can leave an abusive partner and seek emergency shelter without fearing for the safety and well-being of a family pet.
Our program is free and anonymous, and while in the care of C.A.R.E.4Paws, animals have access to free spays/neuters, vaccines and veterinary services as well as animal behavior training. We reunite animals with their loving owners when the time is right.
