A microchip can keep you and your pets together!

June is National Microchip Month! Studies show that when lost, pets with microchips are much more likely to be returned to their families. To help pets find their way home—especially during the July 4 holiday—C.A.R.E.4Paws has partnered with Santa Barbara County Animal Services, Lompoc’s CAPA and San Luis Obispo County Animal Services to offer FREE microchips at all of our June Pet Wellness Clinics.

Collars and pet tags are a pet’s first ticket home, but if they fall off, a microchip provides an extra level of protection. A chip is the size of a grain of rice that gets implanted beneath your pet’s skin, similar to a vaccination. Each chip has its own unique number (think of it as your pet’s social security number). When scanned at an animal shelter or veterinary clinic, the chip reveals your contact information so your pet can be returned to you as quickly as possible. The chip is not the same as a GPS device that tracks your pet.

Beyond our free chip campaign in June, C.A.R.E.4Paws offers microchipping year-round and registers the chip for you. The cost is $15 during regular events and free in Lompoc to residents thanks to CAPA. Chips are also free during many special events with SBCAS and SLOCAS.

This 4th of July holiday, in addition to ensuring your pet is chipped and wears an ID tag, check your fencing and gates and, if you can, keep your four-legged family members inside. Always make sure your pet’s microchip information is up to date with your current phone number, email and address.

Happy Tails fundraiser brings in $165,000 for C.A.R.E.4Paws

Happy Tails fundraiser brings in $165,000 for C.A.R.E.4Paws

C.A.R.E.4Paws recently hosted its third Happy Tails Celebration & Fundraiser raising $165,000 to assist animals and pet families in need.

The event, held at the Music Academy in Montecito, marked the nonprofit’s 15th year of working in underserved communities on the Central Coast to keep pets healthy, out of shelters, and with the people who love them.

“We loved the pawsitive energy and are so grateful for the incredible support for our event,” said Isabelle Gullö, C.A.R.E.4Paws’ cofounder and executive director.

The $165,000 raised was a combination of event sponsorships, live auction proceeds, donations and ticket sales, she said.

“The money will help thousands of families with critical services such as spay/neuter surgeries, veterinary care, vaccines, pet food and supplies,” Gullö said. “Together, we’re creating safety nets that help prevent pet homelessness and improve pet family welfare.”

The event featured vegetarian food by Catering Connection, local wines, craft beer by Rincon Brewery, along with C.A.R.E.4Paws’ signature “meowgaritas.”

The evening provided music by guitarist Jesse Rhodes; a live auction by Auctioneers for Good; and a presentation about C.A.R.E.4Paws’ community work, which included video testimonials, or “happy tails,” from families that the organization has helped.

One such happy tail was from Lucia Trujillo, whose senior dog Luckie has received pet food, supplies and veterinary services from C.A.R.E.4Paws as well as foster care while Lucia was temporarily hospitalized after surgery.

“Luckie is my service dog and trusted companion,” said Trujillo, who attended the event with her pup. “For us, C.A.R.E.4Paws is not just a strong support system, C.A.R.E.4Paws is family.”

Since 2009, C.A.R.E.4Paws has supported several hundred thousand low-income, senior, disabled, and unhoused community members with a range of resources.

C.A.R.E.4Paws provides free and low-cost wellness services through the organization’s Mobile Community Medicine & Spay/Neuter Outreach program, which was expanded from Santa Barbara County to San Luis Obispo County in 2022.

In 2023, operating out of two mobile clinics, C.A.R.E.4Paws assisted 17,500 dogs and cats with spays/neuters and other essential care.

Also, since 2020, the organization has provided more than 4 million pet meals to families struggling financially and it supports pet families exposed to domestic violence through Safe Haven.

“Without access to affordable services and pet food, many families make the difficult decision to relinquish their pets to a shelter to ensure the animals receive essential care,” said Gullö.

“Also, without the availability of free spays/neuters, many dogs and cats stay unaltered, adding to our pet overpopulation problem,” she said.

“C.A.R.E.4Paws intervenes in this crisis by ensuring that financial difficulties, lack of transportation or language barriers don’t get in the way of animals receiving the care they need to stay healthy and with their families,” C.A.R.E.4Paws,” Gullö said.

To support the Happy Tails event after the fact, C.A.R.E.4Paws is still promoting mobile clinic sponsorships for its 26-foot mobile veterinary unit, as well as the chance for people to have their dog’s and cat’s portrait featured on the clinic exterior and on C.A.R.E.4Paws’ community programs vehicle, a Ford Transit.

The opportunity includes a professional photo shoot with Valerie Villa from Image by Valerie. Pricing varies depending on the placement and which vehicle. To learn more about these opportunities, email info@care4paws.org.

C.A.R.E.4Paws partners with Good Samaritan Shelter and DignityMoves

This spring, C.A.R.E.4Paws partnered with Good Samaritan Shelter (“Good Sam”) to assist unsheltered pet families moving into two new, pet-friendly housing facilities by DignityMoves—Hope Village in Santa Maria and La Posada in Goleta—as well as Good Sam’s Lompoc shelter, Bridge House.

Since March, we’ve hosted several wellness clinics alongside Good Sam to make sure pets are altered and up to date on vaccines, flea treatment, dewormer and other basic care. Our clinic team brought services to Hope Village on March 22 and April 5 and to Bridge House on April 2. On April 21, we assisted La Posada clients in our largest mobile unit, while a second team went to Santa Maria’s riverbed to support pet families camping in the area.

Through the partnership, C.A.R.E.4Paws also offers animal behavior assessments and dog training as well as training sessions for staff and residents on how to interact with resident pets. So far, we have held several training sessions for dogs staying at Bridge House.

Additionally, we provide pet food and supplies, such as beds, cat litter and crates to all three shelters.

We are excited to participate as our community moves forward to provide more support for the unhoused and to ensure that pet families can stay intact when they go through critical life transitions.

Our community has lost an animal welfare champion

Our community has lost an animal welfare champion

We are deeply saddened about the passing of animal welfare legend Diana Basehart. Diana spent her life caring for animals and fighting for animal rights, and she inspired people around her to do the same. She founded Actors and Others for Animals in 1971 and then later started the Diana Basehart Foundation, which became a program under C.A.R.E.4Paws’ umbrella in 2017 to provide veterinary care for pet families in need in Santa Barbara.

Diana made a remarkable impact in the lives of thousands of animals and pet families in need over the years. At the same time, she was a wonderful, loving and wise friend with a great sense of humor. Diana, you will be missed always and your pawsitive legacy will live on forever.
